From late 1906 onwards Rolls-Royce Ltd began production of their 40/50hp which later became known as the Silver Ghost. The London Motor Show at Olympia in November of 1906 heralded its introduction to the motoring world and by the spring of 1907 the first batch of deliveries were met. The leading coach makers of the time were familiar with being provided with the under carriage from the manufacturers and constructing a body to suit their customers requests. Rolls-Royce continued with this tried and tested method, providing chassis and engine to the coachbuilder of the customers choice who constructed the bodywork, painted, trimmed and furnished the car to order. Almost overnight long established coach makers who had been in business for generations had to adapt their way of thinking away from horse drawn carriage to the new horseless vehicle. The Silver Ghost became an almost instant success thanks to the soundness of its design and the pain staking lengths the Rolls-Royce engineers and workmen went to during construction. The term “The Best Car in the World” was deservedly earnt and it is fair to say that the Ghosts efficiency, reliability and superb performance were unmatched at the time and its reputation laid the foundations for the continued success of the company. During the early days of the company Rolls-Royce enjoyed a golden period of success in India, with the Maharajas choosing Rolls-Royce as their car of choice, to display their opulence and wealth. Many wealthy families bought several cars which included the Maharaja of Patiala, the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh who presided over the state of Patiala from 1900 to 1938. Being one of Rolls-Royces best customers in India, he was offered the opportunity to purchase the very first Twenty produced, then going on to order a whole fleet of them. Prior to this came his order for Chassis No 2517, a Silver Ghost with six seater torpedo coachwork by H.J. Mulliner which was delivered in December of 1913. According to all records Chassis No 2517 was his sixth Silver Ghost, taking delivery of this particular car at the tender age of just 22 years old. Some of the options he chose for the car were a tool roll, jump seats, a London to Edinburgh style dashboard and bonnet and nickel plated wheels. Several decades later Chassis No 2517 was located in Calcutta, complete and original, but in poor condition. It was purchased by an English collector and returned to England where an extensive restoration over four years was undertaken, bringing the car back to its former glory. Silver Ghost specialist Jonathan Harley was entrusted with restoring the chassis and mechanical aspects whilst Wilkinsons restored the coachwork. According to all records and having discussed the car with the parties involved at the time, it is understood that the original coachwork was restored rather than replaced. It has since resided in some high quality collections in Britain and more recently in the United States, belonging for a time to the famous Richard Solove Silver Ghost collection. Mr Solove spent nearly forty years collecting Silver Ghosts and when his collection was complete he owned a model from year produced between 1907 and 1915. This important and elegant Silver Ghost with such interesting history comes serviced, prepared and ready for its next fortunate owners immediate enjoyment.
