Labelled Project 90, the new Continental was unveiled by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd at the Geneva Motor Show in 1984. Available only was a full size fibre glass mock-up of a future Bentley coupe, code named “Nepal.” it took a further Six years for Bentley to premier the continental R at the same Geneva Motor Show . It was described as the “first new Bentley since 1952” which of course was no the case. It was the first Bentley however not to share body styling with a Rolls-Royce for many years. The Continental R had two things in common with its long lost cousin the R Type Continental, those being that the sleek coachwork styled by Mulliner Park Ward was also designed in a wind tunnel and that it shared the same size 16 inch wheels, and was the first model to do so since the 1950s. Its stylish body, penned by John Heffernan and Ken Greenley were very well received and although it was a new concept in appearance, the Continental R had many familiar curves. The Crewes Missile 6.75 L Garrett Turbocharged engine from the Bentley Turbo R was chosen for use in the Continental R. Power output of 325 hp (242 kW) and torque of 450 lb·ft (610 N·m) was estimated, as Rolls-Royce refused to supply official figures. Mated the new 4-speed GM 4L80 E Automatic Gearbox and featured ventilated disc brakes to the front wheels. Top speed was 145 mph (233 km/h), and Rolls-Royce estimated a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds. The Continental R was priced at 271,780 US Dollars in 1992. The outstanding performance, elegant looks and excellent luggage capacity resulted in a Bentley that was very worthy of being named a Continental. During the twelve year production run relatively few cars were made when comparing them to the latest offerings from Bentley.
