This late 1997 BMW 840Ci Sport has the revised and improved 4.4 V8 engine which, compared to the 4.0 predecessor, is smoother, more powerful and returns better fuel economy. The gearbox was also replaced on the facelift model to the sport steptronic box which further increases the joy of driving this fine machine.
The car has been meticulously maintained throughout its life which is reflected in the fact that it has full and comprehensive BMW main dealer history up to 78k and independent servicing up to its current mileage at 98k. Having also just had a full service recently the car runs extremely well. The V8 engine fires up on the first turn of the key in any weather and idles smoothly as it should, coming up to temperature correctly. The gearbox is both silent and silky smooth with effortless changes as youd expect. The ride is impressively planted yet very comfortable with no unwanted knocks or noises. The brakes are very responsive having benefitted from a recent overhaul to include new callipers and discs.
Interior
As you can imagine the cabin of the 8 series is a lovely place to be. The seats in this car are the desirable black leather interior which are both smarter and age much better than the common grey which always shows its age. They are fully adjustable heated memory seats. There are no signs of wear, rips, scratches or anything. The rest of the interior is similarly in great condition without a mark anywhere. It is also completely original including the upgraded factory BMW Business sound system which is a real pleasure.
Electrics
One of the greatest attractions and the most notable features of the 8 series are its pop up headlights and the pillarless coupe design. As with everything else the headlights work as they should and all four windows are smooth and silent. Opening the electric sunroof at the same time brings you the closest you could be to convertible motoring without the costs and inconvenience of owning a convertible. The electric memory seats enable any driver find the right seating position with endless adjustability. The onboard computer gives you readings of everything you can imagine from speed to distance travelled to MPG and will also warn you of any errors. The computer reading has no errors and has 5 green lights indicating the next service is not due for a long while yet. The electric mirrors as well as all other switches and knobs work as they should and there are no warning lights on the dash.
Exterior
The exterior of this 840 is stunning. The paint has a very deep shine and looks absolutely superb from every angle, the deep metallic silver showing off the cars curves nicely. The wheels are the much sought after 17” BMW 'throwing stars'. They have benefitted from a recent refurb and are looking immaculate. 4 new Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres (the factory recommended tyre) have been fitted and balanced. Being a Sport model the car came with factory option M-Tech sport kit including mirrors and front and rear spoilers which really compliment the lines of the car and set it aside from other examples.
