Louis Renault was born in Paris during 1877 and was expected to join the family button business. He first became an apprentice boiler manufacturer, then carried out military service before having his own workshop in the grounds of the family home. It was at these premises where he built a small four wheel car powered by a 270cc single cylinder engine. He completed this car in 1898 as a hobby and soon began taking orders from friends for replicas. By March 1899, the Renault company was formed and exhibited at the Paris Salon later that year taking 60 orders. Renault had built its first engine by 1902 and annual production by 1905 topped 2,000. By 1913 Renault had become the top car manufacturer in France with an output of 10,000 and during WW1 the Company saw huge expansion producing trucks, tanks and aero engines. By the 1920's Renault saw a further rise in manufacture, growing to 46,000 in 1925 and reaching a pre WWII peak of 61,146 in 1936. The NN model was first presented in 1924 at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris. It was to be the successor for the Renault Type KJ and Type MT. The design was simple, family orientated and a success with 150,000 cars selling. This particular example appears to have been off the road for much of the late 1970's and 1980's. The history suggests that the Renault was restored in the early 1990's and re-registered with the DVLA in 1994. From 1994 the Renault was in light use competing in the odd classic rally. We can see from previous MOT's that the Renault only covered 369 miles from 1994 to 2006. Since 2006 the Renault has been exported to New Zealand and returned to the UK over two years ago. We sold the Renault last summer to one of our regular customers in Stoke on Trent and over 100 miles has been covered since. The recorded mileage since restoration is now almost 600.. The Renault presents well with a very good standard of paint and bodywork. The upholstery was re-trimmed in the 1990's and is of an excellent standard. Mechanically the car appears to be in excellent order with a lively, strong engine and smooth three speed gearbox. The car performs superbly on the road and is a very useable pre-war family saloon.
