Back in the summer of 1969, this Gallic charmer first hit the country lanes of the Loire Valley and there it remained until just 4 months ago, still in the hands of it`s first owner. With just over 80,000 kilometres on the clock, this beautifully-original 4-door saloon has charmed me this past weekend with lovely road manners and despite just 845cc, plenty of power around town and decent cruising ability. With less than 10 known today on UK roads, this retro-package is a rare sight too. So if you are seeking style and practicality on a budget and fancy being the only example at shows during the forthcoming season, read on!

The Renault 6 was introduced in 1968 as a larger and more-upmarket Renault 4 built upon the same platform and using the same basic mechanics. This included the 845cc 4-cylinder engine and dashboard-mounted gearlever and over-the-engine linkage identical to that used in comparable Citroens of the period. Indeed, the R6 was aimed directly at the Ami 6 and Dyane with four doors and an opening hatch-back allowing great versatility. Whilst the 845cc was peppy enough for the R4, it was a little under-powered for the larger R6 and by 1970, was replaced by an 1100cc unit. Production ceased in 1980.

Our car was imported from the Loire Valley and the end of 2011 by a Warminster-based Citroen and Renault Specialist. The car was subsequently MOT`d and has now been UK-registered although it still carries its original French plates for authenticity! For the MOT, the notorious suspension mountings were replaced (body lifted-off) but otherwise, it sailed through. The car is astonishingly original and remarkably rust-free. The paintwork has suffered some sun damage and several shades of green are evident upon careful inspection but this is all part of its character! The inside is very good with original trim, door cards and head-lining showing a gentle patina.

Turn the key and the eager little engine fires into life. Select 1st and it pulls away with a surprising turn of speed. Second, third and fourth come easily (even to a driver not familiar with the type of gear-change!) and within 10 minutes, it really does feel like a second skin with predicable handling, good brakes and lovely, positive steering. I have used it all weekend and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Huge charm on a budget and great fun too.
