As the Porsche 356 quickly became a reference as a sportscar, Porsche decided to renew its best-seller in 1956 with the release of the 356 Type A. This new version only offers minimal changes in terms of design, keeping its pointy nose and small round taillights, and with a slightly redesigned dashboard to nest new gauges.

The biggest evolution is found beneath the rear hood, with the adoption of the new, 60 bhp, 1600 cc engine as standard. The Super version also gains 5 bhp compared to the 1500 cc and reaches 75 bhp. The 356 A kept the same bodies offered in previous years: coupe, convertible and Speedster.
