In 1966, Fiat released the convertible version of its current 124 sedan, the Fiat 124 Sport Spider. This 2+2 Convertible is one of Fiat’s most seductive designs. Created by Sergio Pininfarina himself, the car took cues from his 1963 Chevrolet “Rondine” Corvette concept as well as from the Ferrari 275 GTS. At first offered with 1,400, then 1,600 cc engines, the 124 Sport Spider became a real sports car in 1972 when Fiat paired up with Abarth to develop the C Spider Abarth (also known as CSA). Essentially a type approval model for entry in racing, this car was sold in limited numbers for only three years, essentially to private racers who intended to use it on the rallying scene. They used a new 1,756cc engine developing 128 bhp thanks to two twin-choke carburettors. Only 1,013 of these Abarth Spiders were built. The car we are pleased to offer is a beautiful example of a private Group 4 example. Delivered new to Italy and in exceptional original condition, this late VIN 124 Abarth Group 4 was sold to a private racer in Group 4 specification. A couple of years ago, the original engine needed a complete rebuilt, and the owner decided the car deserved more power by adopting a later, 2-liter engine with 170 bhp thanks to 48mm carburettors. The restored original, matching numbers engine mounted with 44mm carburettors is available as well. As for the specifications, the gearbox is a reinforced Lavazza unit, the seats are the original Fusina models. The car is also equipped with a Halda tripmaster. The wheels are 8” magnesium Cromodora with Michelin TB15 tires. Another set of 7” magnesium Cromodora wheels is available with the car. The Fiat Abarth works team entered similar cars in the World Championship several years in a row, leaving smaller events to privateer racers. This car was no exception, despites limited available documentation only supporting that the car was entered in the 1975 “100.000 Trabuchi” rally. Since then, this 124 Abarth Group 4 participated in countless historical rallies and stood out as a reliable, yet competitive car. Offered with its Italian libretto and its ASI certificate, this Fiat 124 Sport Spider Abarth Group 4 is immediately available in Italy. Please contact us for further details.
