The original Range Rover was introduced in 1970 to provide a capable off road vehicle with better comfort and speed than the Land Rover. The first version featuring a 3 door body, 3.5 litre twin carb V8 and 4 speed manual gearbox coupled to a high/low range transfer box with permanent four wheel drive. Over its 25 years in production it evolved with the introduction of an automatic gearbox option, five doors, five speed gearbox, diesel power, various styling and technical upgrades whilst along the way becoming more of a luxury car. With the introduction of its successor in 1994, the P38, the original model was given the Classic badge in its final two years in production alongside the new Range Rover.
