A$ 225,000 Ferrari’s first mid-engined supercar, the 365 Berlinetta Boxer, debuted at the 1971 Turin Motor Show and replaced the Daytona at the head of the Prancing Horse’s model line up. With a 4.4 litre Flat 12 under the curvaceous Pininfarina body, Ferrari claimed their flagship could top 188 mph - in reality Road & Track could only reach 175 mph in their 1975 road test but was still the fastest road car the magazine had ever tested. With just 387 365 Boxers built (and just 88 delivered in right hand drive), this is the rarest of all the BB variants and the purest, with six tail lights and no chin spoiler to spoil Pininfarina’s sexy shape, plus lovely knock-on 15 inch Cromodora alloys. The 365 is also the fastest BB, smog gear slowing down the later 512s, and is at its best out on the open road when that amazing flat twelve really comes on song and the frustrations of city driving disappear in the mirrors. The interior is oh so Seventies Italian supercar with its cubist dash, switchgear and the traditional open gate. This amazing time warp Ferrari was delivered to the original owner, well known Melbourne enthusiast Tom Luxton, through the local agent W.Lowe and remained in his ownership until 1995, when the second and current owner bought it. The car has a great patina, with the original paint, upholstery and trim and requires only a little recommissioning to make it fully useable. Sold with the original books, the Boxer is a stunning example of this desirable Ferrari supercar, super rare in Pino Verde and even harder to find in right hand drive guise. With 275s and Daytonas hitting stratospheric price levels in recent years, the 365 BB is surely the next big Ferrari mover value wise – don’t say we didn’t tell you! |
