Lot number 208 Estimate £2,200 - £2,800 Description AJS 16MS 350 Year 1957 Colour Black Engine size 348 cc Chassis No. A60378 Engine No. 56/16M S30124 The rigid framed AJS Model 16M 350cc single was developed in 1945 from the military Matchless G3/L World War Two motorcycle. Well proven in war service, the 350cc single remained in production selling large numbers to the civilian market well into the 1960s. Simple and practical, the Model 16 needed minimal maintenance and was very economical—ideal during petrol rationing. In 1949 the rigid rear end was replaced by a swinging arm controlled by hydraulically dampened spring units and the model became the 16MS. In 1953 a dual seat replaced the saddle and rear pillion seat. In 1956 the Burman gearbox was replaced with a new four speed unit of AMC's own design and in 1957 further improvements included replacement of the magneto with a camshaft mounted Lucas alternator and replacement of the pressed-steel primary drive cover by an alloy casing. First registered in January 1958, this 16MS appears to be a 1957 model and is said to be in good running order throughout with an MOT until December 2010. At the time of cataloguing we had not had chance to inspect either the vehicle or its documents and prospective purchasers are invited to do so before they make their bids.
