Lot number 48 Estimate £8,500 - £10,000 Description BMW 3.0 CSL Lightweight Registration RXF 295L Year 1973 Colour White Engine size 2,985 cc Chassis No. 2285203 Engine No. 2285203 Launched in 1968, the BMW E9 Coupe was one of the most handsome cars ever to roll from the Munich factory. Sleek and shark-like, it had a wonderfully elegant and airy cockpit with slim windscreen pillars, a large glass area and a beautifully restrained wooden dash. Initially powered by a 2.8-litre straight-six, this was replaced by a 3-litre unit in 1971 that produced 180bhp on Solex carbs, later 200bhp with Bosch fuel injection which gave it a top speed of 140mph. Most cars had all-steel bodywork but from 1972-75 a limited run of 1,039 cars were made with aluminium bonnet, boot and doors, thinner gauge steel elsewhere and lighter interior trim with Scheel bucket seats. Designated the CSL (Coupe Sport Leicht) these were some 300lbs lighter than the standard car and were ‘homologation specials’ that allowed BMW’s motorsport division to take on Ford’s previously all-conquering RS Capris and win the European Touring Car Championships in 1973. Only 500 examples were supplied to the UK market and all were quickly sold despite a hefty price tag of £6,399 – nearly twice as much as a V12 Jaguar E-Type. First registered in February 1973, this CSL has had just four owners and has only covered 38,000 miles from new. As a letter in the history file reveals, it was first bought on a whim by a Miss P Shaw of Huddersfield who spotted it in Chenhalls Garage, Paignton, while on holiday in Devon and instantly fell for its rakish good looks. She kept it until 1979, only covering 5,000 miles before selling it to Arthur Wells of North Yorkshire. Seven years later he sold it to David Benson of Goole in 1986, who was to keep it until 1993 when it was bought by the current vendor after a long search that had seen him reject several other examples. Attracted by the low mileage and complete originality of the car, he covered around 7,000 miles in it during his first year of ownership before taking it off the road in 1994 with the intention of restoring it to show condition. However, pressure of other commitments meant that the work was never actually begun and the car has sat in his garage ever since, although it has been occasionally started and run. The oil and filter have been changed in preparation for the auction, new plugs fitted and fresh fuel added and the car now starts on the key, but further recommissioning would be wise before the engine is run for any length of time. It comes with several new body panels including a pair of genuine BMW CSi front wings, inner and outer sills and inner wing flitch panels. There is also a spare set of refurbished alloy wheels and some new rear number plate lights. The interior is all original and in generally very clean condition with the correct Scheel bucket seats. The car will now need a certain amount of restoration and recommissioning before it can be pressed back into use but there is no doubt that it will eventually make a very fine example. Pleasingly, it retains much original paperwork including the original service book, various period sales brochures and other sales literature, bills and service history and nine old MOTs back to 1984 at 26,998 miles. There is also a full tool kit in the boot. Values of these rare lightweight coupes have risen strongly in recent years and this low mileage example with a known history from new looks a very tempting project at the guide price suggested today.
