Lot number 44 Estimate £8,500 - £10,000 Description Daimler EL24 Limousine Registration DYY 450 Year 1937 Colour Black/Purple Engine size 3,310 cc Chassis No. 45514 Engine No. 85172 Produced from 1937 to 1939, the Daimler EL24 range was based on a Daimler rolling chassis on which various coach builders fitted a variety of body styles from saloons and limousines to fixed-head and drophead coupes. The six-light limousine, as here, was usually bodied by Charlesworth and proved popular as mayoral transport. The chassis was of a latticework box section with a special cruciform centre bracing which gave exceptional torsional stiffness. It also featured a built-in lubrication and jacking system with ‘Gilt-Edge’ safety glass fitted throughout. Power came from a 3.3-litre straight-six rated at 23.8hp with push-rod operated overhead valves operated by a chain driven high clearance cam, a 7-bearing crankshaft with a torsional vibration damper, SU carburettor and mechanical petrol pump. Depending on body style, the car had a top speed of around 73mph and 20-25mpg economy. Transmission was via a four-speed pre-selector gearbox with Daimler fluid-flywheel and direct drive top gear. Suspension was by beam axles with semi-elliptic springs with a pair of radius rods at the front and Luvax shock absorbers. Brakes were Girling mechanical with a Dewandre servo. In all just 710 examples of all body types were made. First registered in July 1937, this EL24 limousine has a glass division and two occasional seats in the back. The car had one owner from 1982 to 2009 and is believed to have had just one other owner before that. The indicated mileage of around 35,300 is believed by the vendor to be genuine but there is insufficient history to verify this. The car was substantially refurbished about 15 years ago including a full engine rebuild, interior retrim and a respray. It has covered very few miles since and is said to remain in good order throughout with a beautifully smooth and quiet engine with excellent oil pressure and a good gearbox. Last taxed, tested and on the road in 2005, it has been in storage since but is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale and will be driven some 40 miles to the saleroom.
