Lot number 38 Estimate £14,500 - £16,000 Description Austin 18/6 Carlton Saloon Registration TJ 3450 Year 1933 Colour Blue/Black Engine size 2,510 cc Chassis No. 6TC26793/6 Engine No. 1EE895/18 Although the first Austin car was marketed as early as 1906, it was really not until the 1922 season that the company established itself as perhaps the number one player in the domestic car market. This was due largely to the phenomenal success of Austin's 7hp and 12hp models (the latter described by Georgano as “one of the hardest-wearing machines of all time”) which gained an enviable reputation for utter dependability at an affordable price. By 1932 they had been joined by two other outstanding models, the 16hp and the 18hp, particularly lively 6-cylinder machines which helped cement the firm's reputation as the car maker for both the mid-market and the masses. Dating from 1933, this is a particularly rare and well-appointed version of the 18/6 known as the Carlton Saloon. Only produced between December 1933 and June 1934, it was a full five seater with a sliding sunroof and a beautifully trimmed cabin with leather upholstery, rear passenger footrests, wooden door cappings and window surrounds and a collapsible luggage rack to the rear. Power came from the usual 2.5-litre side-valve inline six rated at 18hp. Not much is known about the early history of the car but it was first registered in Lancashire and appears to have remained in the area for many years. In the 1960s it was fully restored by an owner in Rossendale, Lancs, and then put into storage for over 20 years before being acquired by a Mr Anderson of Surrey. It subsequently found its way to Northern Ireland but returned to England in 2009 and regained its original registration number, TJ 3450. Still in lovely condition today and said to very correct in all aspects, it drives beautifully and is taxed and MOTd until November 2010. It comes with a fair amount of history, an owner’s handbook and a quantity of other literature relevant to the model. Altogether a delightful and rare machine that is sure to prove a real talking point wherever it goes. Wednesday, 24 March at 12 noon Auctioneer of classic cars and motorcycles |
