Lot number 34 Estimate £12,500 - £14,000 Description Austin Ulster replica Registration Z 4654 Year 1931 Colour Green Engine size 745 cc Chassis No. 145723 Engine No. M146271 Launched in 1922, the Austin Seven was an unprecedented success that not only saved Austin but wiped out most other small cars and cyclecars of the early 1920s. Simply yet brilliantly engineered by Herbert Austin and his young protégé, Stanley Edge, it quite literally put Britain on the road. Occupying barely more tarmac than a motorcycle and sidecar, it still had all the comforts of a family saloon and boasted such luxuries as four-wheel drum brakes and (from 1924) an electric starter. Built around an A-frame chassis, it was powered by a 10hp 747cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Suspension was by transverse-leaf springs at the front and quarter-elliptics to the rear. Available in numerous different body styles, it remained in production until 1939. Tough, easy to maintain and huge fun to drive, it has long been the backbone of the vintage car movement. Most famous of all the Sevens was the amazing EA Sports of 1930, commonly nicknamed the Ulster in honour of its resemblance to the works racers that had blown the doors off virtually all other competitors at the Ards TT race in Ulster in 1929. Fitted with superchargers, a pair of these heroic little buzz bombs, driven by Archie Frazer-Nash and Sidney Holbrooks, led for the first four hours of this six-hour race before finally finishing third and fourth behind Campari’s supercharged Alfa Romeo 6C/1750 and Carraciola’s Mercedes-Benz 38/250. This giant-slaying achievement led to the manufacture of some 168 road-going Ulsters from 1930 – 32 which shared many of the features of the works cars. These included: an aluminium boat-tailed two-seater body with no doors; side-mounted exhaust; dropped front axle; rev counter; four-branch manifold; close-ratio gearbox and a high compression engine with pressurised lubrication. The net result was a car over 50% more powerful than standard with 24bhp on tap and a top speed of 72mph. Registered as a 1931 model, this particular Seven was built in Ireland about 25 years ago as a faithful copy of an EA Sports Ulster by the current registered keeper (now deceased). Based on the correct short-chassis platform with a dropped front axle, it appears to have all the features one would expect on a genuine Ulster, including the high compression engine with pressurised lubrication system (on start up the oil pressure gauge shoots straight up to 60psi and settles at 30psi when warm, whereas a standard Seven starts at around 15psi and settles at virtually nil when warmed and running). It also has the correct canvas fold-away hood, in excellent condition. Unfortunately, due to the death of the owner/builder, we have not been able to establish the exact specification of the car but the large amount of technical literature that accompanies it, plus its general outward appearance, would lead one to assume that it is identical to a genuine Ulster in all important respects. Presented in excellent cosmetic condition throughout, the car has been in storage for several years and, although it starts and runs beautifully, it would doubtless benefit from a certain amount of precautionary recommissioning before being pressed back into use. The car is still on its Irish number plates and has an Irish registration document but re-registering it for UK use would be nothing more than a formality.
