Lot number 29 Estimate £8,500 - £10,000 Description Austin Ulster replica Registration BNX 552 Year 1937 Colour Aluminium Engine size 850 cc Chassis No. 269771 Engine No. M289164 We are indebted to the vendor for the following description: This Ulster Replica was constructed in 2002 to 2003. The base vehicle was a wrecked Ruby saloon of 1937 vintage, last used in 1970. The chassis was stripped, altered at the rear to accept the Ulster Replica body, shot blasted and powder coated, the whole process being recorded on photographs. The steering utilises an early steering box, rebuilt. The front axle is late Ruby, in good unworn condition, the kingpin eyes having been strengthened, then bowed to correct Ulster profile then new kingpins, bushes, track rod ends etc fitted. The shock absorbers are to “Road and Trial” specification and a Panhard rod has been fitted to improve lateral axle location. The “A” frame has been boxed in and brake reaction bars added to eliminate axle twist under braking. The whole 'semi-Girling' braking system was stripped and rebuilt using new parts where necessary. The rear axle was not stripped, but had new wheel bearings fitted. It runs without noise or backlash. The springs were re-tempered and re-profiled by Jones Springs of Darlaston. Virtually every nut and bolt (to original BSF specification wherever possible) have been renewed. The engine was built by renowned Austin engine man Tim Myall to “Road and Trial” specification and has a new Phoenix two-bearing crank but uses the later Ruby block and head. The block has been bored out to accept Honda pistons, all conrods being crack-tested prior to assembly. The head has been modified to improve gasflow, the camshaft reprofiled, a lightweight flywheel, competition clutch and a newly built close-ratio gearbox fitted. Full flow oil filtration, a high capacity oil pump, a deep cast alloy sump, cast alloy inlet manifold and a new SU carburettor complete a very lively engine, capable it is said of revving to over 7,000 rpm. The engine and gearbox alone cost around £3000 and a signed specification from Tim Myall is on file. The excellent all-alloy body is built by Rod Yates of Heathfield, Sussex and is his interpretation of the Ulster body built for competition by Herbert Austin around 1930, but stretched by 4” to fit the longer chassis. All bills are available on file. The dynamo is rebuilt to 12v, the wiring loom was constructed from scratch using modern colour codes and a new battery was fitted last year. Old lights have been retained to preserve the period look, with flashing indicators for safety reasons. The car is currently taxed and has an MOT until June 2010.
