Lot number 18 Estimate £1,200 - £2,500 Description Rover P6 3500S Registration LAC 86P Year 1975 Colour Light Green Engine size 3,528 cc Chassis No. 48113098D Engine No. 48113362D Introduced in 1966, the P6 was the sixth and the last of the famous 'P' series Rovers to reach production. Looking positively futuristic compared to earlier models, it was immediately voted European Car of the Year. It also won awards for safety, thanks to its carefully designed passenger cell and advanced unibody design with non-stressed panels bolted to a massively strong unit frame. Other advanced features included a de Dion tube suspension at the rear, four wheel disc brakes (inboard at the rear) and a fully-synchromesh transmission. Top of the range was the 3500S, launched in 1970 with an uprated 153bhp 3.5-litre V8. With fine handling and a top speed of 123mph, it quickly became a big favourite with the motorway police - and with the Flying Squad... First registered in September 1975, this 3500S was first owned by two of the directors at Joseph Lucas in Birmingham, one of whom took it with him when he retired. The current vendor worked at the local Rover dealership and always admired the car when it came in for servicing and finally managed to buy it in 1982. A real P6 enthusiast and a life-long member of the owner’s club, he removed all four wings on the car shortly after acquiring it, treated the base structure with waxoyl and fitted four new wings. For the next decade or so he ran the car daily before retiring it for occasional show use only. About one year ago the car was again extensively waxoyled and the engine and gearbox were removed for inspection. After a good clean up and decoke, all the bores and bearings were judged to be in fine condition, the gear linkage mechanism was overhauled, a new clutch kit fitted and the engine and box reinstalled. New front brake calipers were also fitted at about the same time, a full service carried out and new rear suspension bushes fitted. Although the odometer is currently reading around 37,000 miles, the car had a documented speedo change at 96,000 miles so the total mileage covered from new is around 133,000 miles. The car is said to be in good condition throughout with a very sound structure and to drive very well indeed. The only known faults are that the handbrake warning light flickers occasionally even when the handbrake is off, the ammeter doesn’t indicate properly although the charging system is fine, and the car occasionally slips out of reverse when backing up steep inclines unless you keep your hand resting on the gear lever – on level ground it works perfectly. Fitted with a Webasto sunroof and a tow bar for a garden trailer, it comes with a large amount of history and is MOTd until September and taxed until June. In long term enthusiast ownership and with only three keepers in all, it looks great value at the guide price suggested today - especially for anyone who has ever harboured any Sweeney fantasies.
