The fuel crisis had coincided with the release of the XJS, so there was little demand for a 5.3L V12 tourer. This promoted Jaguar to give the engine an over-haul in ’81, improving fuel economy and also improving performance while they were at it. The Jaguar XJS was now the fattest automatic-transmission car in production with a top end of 168mph and 60mph arriving in just 5.7 seconds.

’83 saw Jaguar release a cabriolet XJS, using a new 3.6L Jaguar AJ6 engine. The Jaguar XJ-SC/XJSC was purely a 2 seater and came with a removable, middle hard-top much like the Porsche Targa.
