Carroll Shelby built a name with the Ford 289 engine, competition was fierce to stay competitive Shelby had to have an answer to the " Corvette Grand Sports, which in 1963 were 9 seconds a lap quicker than the Cobras. Shelby had been promised a new aluminium block version of Fords 390 engine, however internal resistance developed from the NASCAR faction inside Ford.Shelby was forced to make do with the cast iron 427. Although reliable at 500 bhp, the engine was much heavier, so a complete Chassis redesign was needed, the result was a new Chassis, 5" wider with coil springs all-round,Fords engineering department responded , the work was done & the Legendary 427 Cobra was born. Rule changes meant that just 53 Competition Chassis were completed by AC. Sixteen chassis were sold to private teams, one went to Ford Engineering, 34 remaining chassis were something of a problem, not sold at this time. Charles Beidler, Shelby's East Coast representative suggested the cars were painted and completed as " Street Cars, to be marketed as the fastest street car ever. The idea worked , and the 427 S/C ( for semi competition was born ) as cars were converted for street use 3 more orders were received for full competition cars totalling 19 " production" full competition cars .
