Here we have a truly unique example of BMWs flagship luxury saloon; the 750iL. Presented in BMW ‘Individual’ Romantic Red with Beige/Cream Nappa leather with red piping, this 7 series most definitely stands out from the crowd. A 7 Series with the ‘Individual’ treatment is a rarity. The BMW Individual programme is BMW ownership at its most exclusive, with colours that are no where to be seen in the standard 7 series sales brochure. The piped red interior compliments the Romantic Red exterior really well. The ‘E38’ (1994-2001) BMW 7 series is the largest of the three saloon cars produced by BMW. There were various models available for the UK market, these included: • 7.28i (2.8 litre 6 cylinder) • 7.30i (3.0 litre V8) • 7.35i (3.5 litre V8) • 7.40i/iL(4.0 litre & 4.4 litre V8) • 7.50i/iL (5.4 litre V12) Prices started at circa £34,000 for the entry model, up to £76,500 for the top of the range model. This particular 7 series cost the original owner around £84,000 as it has a few thousands of pounds worth of optional extras (see later in ad for a full breakdown of these!). This 750iL has masses of rear leg room, as it is the Long Wheel Base version. The LWB model is approximately six inches longer than the 750i SWB. The extra length is absorbed into the rear doors. SWB 7 series aren’t small by any means, so you can imagine how imposing the 750iL is both inside and out. BMW never officially offered a LWB Sport, but if they did it would have looked very similar to this 750iL, as it is fitted with 18” M-Parallel wheels, normally seen on the SWB Sport model. The car even has the M-Sport steering wheel, also seen on the Sport model. The LWB models normally come with matt black side skirts. The side skirts on this 750iL are body coloured, as per the Sport model. The front indicators have been upgraded to the later ‘facelift’ clear indicators. Being the largest of the BMW saloons, the standard specification is fantastic, a lot of which would be cost optional on BMW 3 and 5 series models. The list is massive, so I will list the most useful: • 6 disc boot mounted CD changer • Airbags all round • Automatic gearbox with Steptronic (semi-auto) • Automatic Stability Control (ASC) • Cruise control • Dual-zone climate control • Dual cup holders, front and rear • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) • Electrically adjustable front seats (incl headrests) with memory for driver’s seat • Electrically adjustable exterior mirrors • Electric sunroof • Electric windows • Headlight level adjustment • Headlight washer system • Onboard computer (MPG, temperature, miles left in tank etc) • Park Distance Control (PDC) front and rear • Remote central locking • Service interval indicator • Servotronic (speed-sensitive) power steering • Soft-close boot • Traction control The specification of this 750iL is phenomenal, it makes a £60,000 740i look tame. The spec listed below is fitted as standard to the 750iL only: • DOUBLE GLAZING. Twice as thick as normal 7 series windows and with a 3mm air gap, this results in an ultra-quiet environment inside the car. • ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTABLE STEERING WHEEL. You can move the steering wheel up, down, backwards and forwards at the touch of a button. This can be linked to the driver memory settings. • ELECTRONIC DAMPER CONTROL. This adjusts the dampers instantaneously to all kinds of different road, load and driving conditions. • EXTENDED HIGH GLOSS BURR WALNUT. This interior trim is extended to areas such as the surrounds of the rear courtesy lights and the rear of the front seats. • FULL LEATHER. The leather is extended to the dash, which is hand stitched. Normal 7 series have a plastic dash. • HEATED SEATS. The front and rear seats are heated. Each of the four seats has a button to control the heat from low-high. • MIRROR PACKAGE. This package consists of electric folding exterior mirrors and automatically dimming interior and exterior mirrors. The electrical adjustment of the mirror glass can be linked to the driver’s memory settings. • NAPPA LEATHER. The vast majority of 7 series have what’s known as “Montana” leather. Nappa leather oozes quality. It looks and feels totally different to standard leather, it is also much more hard wearing. • NAVIGATION SYSTEM. This system has full colour maps along with audible and visual instructions. The front monitor can also be used to view radio/CD tracks, telephone info, heating/ventilation functions, on-board computer etc. • REAR ELECTRIC SEATS. The rear seats are individually power adjustable for backrest angle, as well as having multi-position lumbar support. The rear headrests go up and down electrically too. • SELF LEVELLING REAR SUSPENSION. This automatic rear suspension allows the car to maintain a good handling and road holding despite any weight that may be in the car. • SUN BLINDS. There are five sun blinds fitted to the rear. There are two manual blinds on each side window and one full width rear window blind which can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button. • TELEPHONE. This fixed phone can be used hands-free. Use the buttons on the steering wheel to make or accept a call. You can view your phone book on the colour monitor and even read text messages on the monitor too! • TELEVISION. You can view terrestrial channels 1-5 on the full colour front screen. There is also the facility to view Teletext, which is useful for lottery numbers if nothing else! The television has been “unlocked” so it can be viewed on the move if you wish, although I do not recommend this for obvious reasons! • XENON HEADLIGHTS. These ultra bright lights make night time driving a pleasure. These are more than twice as bright as conventional halogen headlights. The above 15 items of standard 750iL spec are all expensive cost options on other 7 series models, but see if you can find a 728i, 730i, 735i or 740i with 100% of this kit fitted to the same car! I have a copy of the build sheet for this 750iL. The sheet confirms that the car was ordered with the following six cost optional extras in addition to the already impressive standard specification: • CONTOUR SEATS (FRONT). There were three different types of seats available for the 7 series range. The majority of 7 series will have Standard Seats. Then there’s Comfort Seats which were a cost option on all models, except the 750i/750iL where they were fitted as standard. Finally, there’s the top of the range Contour Seats. These seats offer excellent side support and superior comfort. Extra side padding ensures an even more stable seating position in bends. This seat offers adjustment not only of seat rake and height, but also of the upper half of the back rest. Another feature of this seat is the electrical adjustment of thigh support. • DSP HI-FI. This expensive optional extra is a high-end digital sound system with 14 speakers and an amplifier. This system has various settings, all of which can be altered through the cars onboard monitor. This is a rare option even by 750iL standards. • INDIVIDUAL EXTERIOR COLOUR. The Romantic Red metallic is an extremely rare colour and available by special order only. Out of all the ‘Individual’ colours I’ve seen on BMWs over the years, some are seen more frequently than others (e.g. Mora Purple was a popular ‘Individual’ colour for the E38). I can honestly say that I’ve never come across another BMW in Romantic Red! • INDIVIDUAL INTERIOR. Again, available by special order only, the cream/beige interior with red piping compliments the Romantic Red exterior really well. • M-SPORT MULTI-FUNCTION STEERING WHEEL. This sporty steering wheel is leather covered and has controls for radio, telephone, on board computer etc. • 18” M-PARALLEL ALUMINIUM WHEELS. There is also a fifth one of these as a spare. These wheels are not usually fitted to LWB models, but they’re on the build sheet! They’re normally seen on the SWB ‘Sport’ models. The Titanium Silver 750iL in the 1997 James Bond Film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ has the same 18” M-Parallel wheels, he also had great taste! The optional extras above would have pushed the price up to somewhere in the region of £84,000 new, 12 years ago. The 326bhp 5.4 litre V12 engine is superb. The late 1990s Rolls Royce Silver Seraph shares the same engine as the 750iL, which says it all. This masterpiece won International Engine of the Year Award in 1999 (4.0 litre plus category) and it is easy to see why when you experience it. This 12 cylinder engine can take this two tonne BMW from 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds. The fuel economy is much better than that of BMW’s previous 5.0 V12 on the older shape (E32, 1987-1994) 750iL. Driven carefully on a run, you can expect to achieve between 26 and 28mpg which is great for a V12 and only marginally different from the 735i and 740i V8 models. My father had a new 740i Sport in 2001, which would achieve between 27 and 30mpg on a run from its 4.4 V8 286bhp engine. However, if you’re after even better economy, go for the entry model (728i), its 190bhp engine will do 36mpg. The 740i V8 is a popular 7 series, and a very quick car. However, the 5.4 V12 really is something else and most definitely worth the extra £20,000 in addition to a 740i when new! 136,000 miles has been covered from new, and the car still drives positively today, with smooth gear changes and effortless power. There are 17 stamps in the service book, these are as follows: • Pre-Delivery Inspection at 10 miles on 14th January 1998 (BMW (GB) Distribution Centre, Thorne) • Service at 9328 miles on 20th May 1998 (BMW (GB) Distribution Centre, Thorne) • Service at 19,252 miles on 4th December 1998 (Bridgegate BMW, Derby) • Service at 29,494 miles on 22nd April 1999 (Bridgegate BMW, Derby) • Service at 39,006 miles on 8th September 1999 (Bridgegate BMW, Derby) • Service at 46,828 miles on 30th March 2000 (Sytner BMW, Leicester) • Service at 54,240 miles on 15th September 2000 (Sytner BMW, Leicester) • Service at 66,096 miles on 19th March 2001 (Sytner BMW, Leicester) • Service at 69,400 miles in 2001 (Castle Motors, Trebrown, Cornwall) • Service at 87,173 miles on 28th January 2002 (Ocean BMW, Falmouth) • Service at 99,793 miles in July 2002 (Castle Motors, Trebrown, Cornwall) • Service at 105,004 miles on 23rd August 2003 (Cummings, Bodmin, Cornwall) • Service at 108,214 miles on 19th June 2004 (Cummings, Bodmin, Cornwall) • Service at 114,618 miles (Castle Motors, Trebrown, Cornwall) • Service at 124, 427 miles on 14th February 2008 (Sean McGranagham Specialist Vehicles, Langley Moor, Durham) • Service at 129, 312 miles on 16th May 2008 (Sean McGranagham Specialist Vehicles, Langley Moor, Durham) • Service at 135, 951 miles on 12th November 2009 (Tyne Street Garage, Winiaton, Tyne & Wear) The M.O.T. expires on November 12th 2010. There is road tax until the end of March 2010. There is a handful of receipts, these include: • 14th February 2008 (£1059.25, includes spark plugs, air filters, oil, discs, pads, track control arms, track control arm bushes, steering idler arm, anti roll bar bushes, rear tyres) • 13th July 2008 (£213.96, includes mirror glass, buttons, bolt) All handbooks are present in their original BMW wallet. Both remote key fobs are present too. As for negative points, well there's nothing major at all, see below: (1) The plastic moulding around the base of the driver's seat has a crack in it. (2) The right hand half of the kidney grill is slightly loose. (3) The handle for the rear centre armrest is missing. However, the lid has been "velcrowed" on. (4) There is evidence of something having been removed from the carpet in the rear (possibly a TV/Video unit). The car is free of accidents and has never been stolen. I have a certificate to this effect, dated 31st December 2009. Feel free to run your own check for added peace of mind. This once £84,000 vehicle is available for a mere fraction of its original price tag. I buy and sell the occasional prestige car, mainly high-end and unique examples. This 7 Series is registered in my name. I have plenty more interior and exterior photos. If you’re travelling a distance to view this 750iL and would like to see some more pics prior to viewing, please let me know and I’ll email them. Thanks for taking the time to read this advert. Finally, please no timewasters or agencies. |
