For sale is my 1968 Rover P6 3500 automatic. Finished in burnt grey, it’s a very cool Series I and is one of the earliest V8s they made (chassis number ***********498A). It’s a nice example that’s tax-free and MoT’d until November – perfect for enjoying the summer in. It has a stainless steel back box, electronic ignition, a front-mounted Kenlowe fan with a manual override switch, a four-speaker stereo and heated rear windscreen. The ride is excellent and the steering superb: bumps are swallowed up to ensure easy, unflustered, civilised motoring while the rack-and-pinion set up is light but still retains plenty of feel. Series I P6’s didn’t get power steering, but they don’t really need it. Changes from the three-speed automatic gearbox are smooth and, although there is no rev counter (an optional extra), it feels like it’s swapping cogs between 1500-1800rpm…it definitely doesn’t hang on to the gears. Overall, the panels are remarkably rot-free with no rust on the bottoms of the doors or around the arches – there is, however, a blemish on the bonnet and some bubbles at the bottom of the D-pillars on both sides. All-round brake discs are in good condition and stop the car evenly and with the minimum of fuss. At the rear, the rubber gaiter on the De Dion tube is in good condition. The same can be said for all the car’s jacking points. It’s also got lots of history with it, including a stack of MoTs going back to the early Eighties and an old certificate from one of the Rover clubs valuing the car at £3500. Inside, the upholstery is generally in good condition but there is a tear on the side of the driver’s seat and rip on the A-pillar. Rear seats are in good order and have been fitted with modern, inertia reel seat belts. It also has the sliding rear head rests, which I believe were another optional extra. Lifting up the front carpets reveals generally sound metal floor pans, although there are a few rust spots at the very edge where they meet the sills. Underneath the rear seats, the metal is the original, pressed steel style and in very good nick. Sadly, like any 42-year-old car it’s not without its bad points – the worst being the boot floor. Unlike the later cars, the Series I’s never got the rubber seal around the lip of the boot lid. Consequently, the mat underneath the carpet traps the water and rots the floor. This one is no different and has seen better days. It’s a simple problem to fix: cut out and replace it with a solid section from a donor car. The good news is that the rear suspension mounts are rot free and solid. Another bad point is the engine. While the V8 is strong and generally unburstable, this one runs a little rough and a little rich. The previous owner had the engine was serviced regularly with oil changes every 3000 miles. However, it does sound clattery, which to me suggests wear to the camshaft followers. Other jobs on the ‘to do’ list are to back flush the heater to encourage a bit more warm air into the cabin, and re-connect the speedo cable. Although I’d love to spend some money on this and bring the P6 back up to the standard it deserves, I need to concentrate my efforts on my 19k from new, rust-free Ford Anglia 105E, which needs a respray. It’s not in my interest to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes, so I’ve described the Rover honestly. The P6 is a safe, strong and spacious classic – and very early Series I V8’s like this just doesn’t come up for sale very often. If you have any questions or would like to view the car, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The car is in Cambridgeshire. |
