I am reluctantly selling my BMW 840Ci coupe. Presented in the must have colour combination of Bright Red with black leather, this pillarless coupe will always turn heads on the road and your driveway. The previous owners engineering firm spent £90,000 on two used 8 series from Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) in 1997. One business partner sold his 840Ci in 2002, but this one was kept until May 2009 by a non-smoking owner who garaged it every evening throughout his ownership. This car was a breath of fresh air to me, having viewed several poorly maintained examples the length and breadth of the UK. I was nearly put off buying one altogether due to the amount of mechanically and cosmetically poor examples in the marketplace. The majority of these beautiful cars seem to have been getting into the wrong hands in recent years. I have the used car sales invoice from 15th September 1997 stating that the car was purchased for £44,400 with 31,705 miles on the clock from Godfrey Hall BMW in Coventry. Prior to 1997 the car was owned by BMW GB (demonstration vehicle), followed by the Managing Director of Carnell Motor Group, who owned it between October 1996 and September 1997. This May 1996 example has the much improved 286bhp 4.4 litre V8 engine; the pre-1996 BMW 840Ci models had a 4.0 litre engine. In 1996 the base price was £56,850. The standard specification is too much to list, but heres some of it: Airbags for driver and front passenger Air conditioning/climate control Automatically closing side windows at 90mph (not tested!) BMW business RDS with 12 speakers and CD changer Electrically adjustable front seats, with driver memory function Electro chromatic (anti-dazzle) interior rear view mirror First aid kit between rear seats Five-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic and Adaptive Gearbox System (AGS) Folding rear seat backrests Exterior mirrors, lock on drivers door and screen washer nozzles all heated Illuminated vanity mirrors Nappa leather On-board computer (MPG, miles in tank, temperature etc) Opening of side windows and sunroof via remote key-fob Pop-up headlights Remote central locking Servotronic (speed-sensitive) power assisted steering Seat-integrated seatbelt system Skibag mounted between rear seats Sunroof (electrically operated) In addition to the £56,850 base price in 1996, the following cost optional extras were fitted to the car. These extras are outlined on the used car sales invoice from September 1997 and the prices are taken from a 1996 BMW 840Ci price list: 17 Bolted-Cross Spoke aluminium wheels (£1450) Automatic Speed Hold (£415) Graduated Tinted Screen (£95) Headlamp Cleaning System (£355) Sports Seats (£490) A discreet Motorola HF850 Bluetooth phone kit was professionally installed a year or so ago. Although this is a Motorola kit, it can be paired with any Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. It is easy to use, but there is a user manual included! The car has wanted for nothing all of its life, it has literally been maintained regardless of cost. The manufacturers warranty expired when the car was three years old in 1999, as with all BMWs. However, the previous owner purchased extended warranty from BMW GB for a further six years until May 2005, with documentation from BMW to prove. During this period the car received many replacement parts. Recent work carried out includes two new batteries, two new suspension arms and a new exhaust. The car has also wanted for nothing as far as security is concerned. In September 1997 the car was fitted with a Tracker at a cost of £350. This is not currently subscribed to, but I have the certificate, so re-subscription should be easy enough. In October 1997 the car went to a main dealer to be fitted with a BMW EWS Immobiliser. The receipt states that the immobiliser is Thatcham approved and was fitted in addition to the standard BMW factory alarm and deadlocks. This receipt also includes the same immobiliser fitted to the owners business partners 840Ci too! There seems to be an increasing number of used 8 series on the market that have been messed about with, whether it is a cheap aftermarket stereo, DIY tinted windows, aftermarket wheels and suspension or ///M badges front and rear, you get the idea! Luckily this car has survived the boy racer treatment. It is completely standard, apart from a set of 18 BMW M-Parallel wheels. They are genuine BMW wheels bought from a BMW Main Dealer less than five years ago. You may see the same wheels fitted to BMW 5 and 7 series sport models (2000 onwards). These chunky alloys really suit the car and are in stunning condition. All four tyres are top quality Pirelli P Zeros and have loads of tread left in them. The front tyres are 235/40/ZR18 and the rear ones are 265/35/ZR18. The original set of five aluminium wheels are included with the car. As mentioned above, these 17 wheels were a £1450 cost option in 1996. The spare 17 bolted cross spoke wheel has never been on the vehicle. The tool kit appears to be unused and there is a BMW branded yellow duster and key-fob supplied when the car was new, both of which are in their original packets. All the handbooks are present in their original BMW wallet. 112,000 miles has been covered from new. There is a fully stamped service book which consists of the following services: 11,523 miles on 28th November 1996 at Wheatley Hall BMW (Doncaster) 19,933 miles on 27th February 1997 at Wheatley Hall BMW (Doncaster) 31,776 miles on 13th September 1997 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 39,945 miles on 21st May 1998 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 50,034 miles on 1st September 1999 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 59,485 miles on 19th January 2001 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 67,893 miles on 6th August 2002 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 77,487 miles on 22nd January 2004 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 85,822 miles on 24th February 2005 at Godfrey Hall BMW (Coventry) 95,342 miles on 14th June 2006 at Sytner BMW (Coventry) 106,702 miles on 29th April 2008 at Advanced Car Tuning (Birmingham) 111,098 miles on 9th April 2009 at Advanced Car Tuning (Birmingham) All of the M.O.T certificates are included, from the cars first MOT on its 3rd birthday until this year, these are as follows: May 24th 1999 (47,903 miles) May 19th 2000 (55,189 miles) May 17th 2001 (61,106 miles) May 22nd 2002 (66,456 miles) May 16th 2003 (72,666 miles) June 8th 2004 (79,993 miles) June 16th 2005 (88,363 miles) June 22nd 2006 (95,481 miles) June 18th 2007 (101,385 miles) April 29th 2008 (106,702 miles) April 9th 2009 (111,098 miles) The tax expires at the end of August 2010 and the M.O.T. expires in April 2010. I also have every single tax disc from when the car was brand new! I genuinely believe that this 8 series has to be one of the best examples available today, the cosmetic condition is stunning. There is wear to the leather which is expected of a car this age. If I was keeping the car I would attempt to have the leather treated. The no expense spared maintenance schedule shows through the way the car drives and sounds. I would very much like this 8 series go to a true BMW enthusiast who will continue to care for it as it has been since new. If youre in the market for one of these, this car is worth travelling for.
