In 1954 Connaught entered F1 with the B type. Using a specially commissioned 2.5 litre Alta engine, and with a fully streamlined body (it was the first F1 team to have its own wind tunnel). In 1955 with a more normal cigar shaped body fitted, Tony Brooks beat the works Maserati Team to win the Syracuse GP, becoming the first British car and driver to win a post war grand prix. This was also the first time that a car with disc breaks won a Formula 1 race. By 1957 Connaught could no longer afford to continue racing, and all the assets of the racing team were sold off in a two day auction. At the auction, a young Bernie Ecclestone bought two of the B type Connaught, and started his career in F1. At the same time, Dudley Gahagan bought the spare B type chassis and other componements. In 1987 Dudley sold these to Elizabeth Langton who sold it to the present owner in 1991. Over the next 10 years, the car was completed by Connaught specialist Spencer Longland, who has worked, at some time, on all of the running B type Connaught. Since restoration, Bugatti specialist, Tim Dutton, has handled the race preparation. The car has been given the number B9 by Connaught registrar Duncan Rabagliati. The car has original chassis, suspention, engine and gearbox. |
