CONCOURS SS1 COUPE. 1961 MOTOR SHOW ACE. 924S FOR UNDER £1000!
What a sweltering week it has been (so far!), almost too hot for hoodies to run without protective canvas above their sunburned pates. And what an interesting set of possibilities we have for your delectation and delight in our weekly trawl through the new arrivals in our virtual showroom.
Drool over the 1933 S1 16hp Coupe for sale in Scotland or raid the savings for a crack at the 1961 Motor Show AC Ace being auctioned in Derbyshire where a 1966 Alvis TF21 and a 1972 VW Type 2 Camper will also be going under the hammer. Also being auctioned during MG Live at Silverstone in Northamptonshire will be a 1936 PB in Cream Cracker spec and livery.
Following the sell-out of the Halbert Collection of Rileys in Herefordshire, how about a Riley? There is what purports to be a largely unmolested 1934 Monaco for sale in Leicestershire. A 1928 Austin 7 with Gordon England Cup bodywork is for sale in Wiltshire or a 1937 A7 Opal project for restoration awaits you on Derbyshire. Whilst among more modern fare newly come to market, there is a 1974 Alfa S2 Spider in the West Country, an Aussie-built 1976 Mini Moke in Wiltshire or a 1988 Porsche 924S for sale for less than £1000 in South Wales. Happy hunting!
And at the end of this only very brief selection of the many hundreds of newcomer entries to our on-line resource, as every week within this e-newsletter, market watchers can be better informed by checking out the very latest auction prices and sale stats first on CCFS.

Invoices on file for £120,000, concours
1933 SS SS1 16hp Coupe
£87,500 (approx. €98,875 or $141,750)
The private vendor tells us that this 1933 SS, which was much admired at the 2008 Classic Motor Show at the NEC, has been professionally restored to concours standard. Indeed, there are reportedly more than £120,000 worth of bills on file, detailing restorative work carried out to the SS1 16hp Coupe, which as been painted in Dark Blue and has a JDHT Certificate confirming manufacturing details and dating as well as a current MOT. This very stylish 1930s motor car also drives well, he says, and can be seen in Aberdeen.

|
|
This 1928 A7 with sporting Gordon England Cup model replica open bodywork is reportedly in good all-round condition. Although having been unused for 18 months, some minor fettling would be advisable, says the seller, a Wiltshire enthusiast. With the potential for competing in VSCC events, the maroon over black sports can be checked out at Salisbury.

Previously owned 45yrs, original upholstery
1934 Riley 9 Monaco 4-Door Sports saloon
£9,850 (approx. €11,131 or $15,957)
|
Leicestershire dealers Richard White Classic Cars are selling this pre-war Riley 9 Monaco. Having been in previous ownership for nearly forty-five years, during which time it spent much of the time in dry-storage, the 1934-manufactured 4-Door Sports saloon is apparently still largely unmolested . Upholstery and door cards are original as are the carpets, albeit well worn. The original registration is still on the car. Although described in 'as found condition', it reportedly runs and drives very well, and is located in Leicester.

Supercharger, strengthened gearbox
1936 MG PB Cream Cracker Style Trials
Estimate £30,000-40,000
|
Coming under the Coys hammer 11 July during the forthcoming MG Live weekend at Silverstone is this Trials/Speed event PB of 1936 vintage which was originally adapted by Triple M enthusiasts Alan Grassam and Steve Dear, and has been developed during the last eighteen years by the present owner. Improvements include a strengthened PA gearbox (the PB original is included however), a straight-cut YA Type 4-star differential and a Marshall 75 blower. The spec and colour combo are similar to the legendary MG 'Cream Cracker' Team cars of the 1930s. Having been extensively trialled, rallied, sprinted and hill climbed during the last 30 seasons, VH 8637 is reportedly on the key and ready to win many more awards for a new owner at the Silverstone auction where cars for sale can be viewed Friday 10 July as well as on sale day Saturday 11 July.

95% complete, V5C, much potential
1937 Austin 7 Opal 2-Seater Tourer
£3,000 (approx. €3,390 or $4,860)
|
The Opal was the rarest of the trio of precious stone named models employed by Austin in the 1930s. According to the Derbyshire vendor, a private seller in Derby, this 1937-dated Opal open 2-seater has been in receipt of a mechanical rebuild 25 years ago - whilst body metalwork has been repaired and bolted back onto the chassis. Included with the project, which does have a current V5C and is claimed to be 95% complete, are seats, door panels with pockets, instruments, hood frame and side-screens, though only one headlamp and no side or rear lights.

London Motor Show, Ruddspeed, RHD
1961 AC Ace 2.6-Litre Sports
Estimate £140,000-180,000
|
H&H are auctioning another AC Ace at their next Buxton sale which is taking place Wednesday 22 July at their regular Pavilion Gardens venue in the Derbyshire Spa town. The 1961 sports, a right-hand drive Ruddspeed Ace with 2.6 Ford 6-cylinder engine, was the 1960 London Motor Show car which was raced in period. In 1999, 659 CGT was the subject of an extensive Nigel Dawes restoration. The triple Weber fed engine has a Raymond Mays alloy cylinder head, there is an overdrive and the history is continuous and well documented - what more could one possibly want? This, the fastest, rarest and most desirable version of all the Aces can be viewed during the afternoon of Tuesday 21 July as well as pre-sale on Wednesday 22. Buying bids in the £140,000-180,000 range are forecast.

1 of 106 built, wires
1966 Alvis TF21 Saloon
Estimate £15,000-18,000
|
The final incarnation of the T Type 21 Alvis, the March 1966 launched TF-21 was really the Series IV in the line and was powered by a 150bhp triple SU equipped engine. By the time Alvis car production ceased in 29 September 1967, only 105 had been hand-built by the Coventry firm. Finished in blue with blue-grey leather, and with distinctive stacker headlamp arrangement and wire wheels, this TF21 will be offered by H&H in their Wednesday 22 July sale at Buxton with £15,000-18,000 guide price.

In single family ownership from new
1972 VW Type 2 Camper Van
Estimate £10,000-12,000
|
This Volkswagen Camper, a Type 2 in yellow with grey trim and 1700cc engine, has been in single family ownership since new in 1972, says auctioneers H&H in whose next Buxton sale it is being sold. Thanks to celeb ownership and much pop culture media exposure, these iconic vehicles enjoy a cult following and as a result command strong prices. This one is expected to fetch £10,000-12,000 in Derbyshire where it can be inspected in the metal during viewing Tuesday afternoon 21 July and before the sale Wednesday 22.

Ex-Jersey, useable, original wheels included
1974 Alfa Romeo S2 Spider
£4,500 (approx. €5,085 or $7,290)
|
Although the bodywork looks better in the photos, and some small areas are said by the Somerset vendor to require attention, this 1974 Alf S2 with 107,000 mileage displayed reportedly runs well and should therefore be ready to enjoy as is for the rest of the globally warmed summer. The right-hand drive spider in red is currently on retro-fit alloys, though the original wheels are available if required. The good looking Italian is being sold privately in cheesy Cheddar.

1976 Mini Moke
£8,500 (approx. €9,605 or $13,770)
|
The hotter the weather, the cooler Mini Mokes become. The Wiltshire vendor of this Australian-built Moke, whose occupants are protected by a roll-over bar, tells us that the minimalist vehicle was rebuilt by a Jaguar engineer and is in good condition. The green-painted fresh air machine with side-screens, which is being sold privately, is located in Salisbury.

LHD, recent engine overhaul and trim refurb
1988 Porsche 924S 2.5-Litre
£999 (approx. €1,129 or $1,618)
|
The 924 to have, of course, is the 924S with 2.5-litre Porsche engine. This 1988 car, a left-hand drive German import, has benefited from recent engine refurbished with valves, head gasket and belts renewed and a brand new ignition system fitted, says the South Wales vendor. He reports that the clutch has been replaced and sills and nearside rear wing are also new. The coupe is being sold privately for cash in Bridgend.

MARKET COMMENTARY FROM resident analyst Richard Hudson-Evans
FELTHAM ASTONS MOTOR ON STRONGLY. THIRSTY US STOCK BOMBS
Market watchers will no doubt want to be aware that among post-sale deals successfully concluded by Brightwells following their 24 June fixture at Leominster, both Feltham-built Aston Martin DB2/4s have now sold. The 1953 DB2/4 Mk1 2.6-Litre Coupe restored in New Zealand by the later Peter Bruin finally went for £67,000 and a 1955 Mk1 3-Litre with MkIII-style front panel and front disc brakes for £65,000, both below their original pre-sale estimates of £70,000.
A claimed to have been driven only 12,500 miles from new in 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190Sl Roadster has reportedly made £34,000 all-in, a 1954 Bentley R Type £17,500 and a 1995 Merc SL500 2+2 Roadster with factory hardtop and stand and less than 38,000 miles displayed £10,000. Including these aftersales, 88 or 69% of the 128 entries sold for £1.64m, the largest collector vehicle sale total ever recorded by the Herefordshire auctioneers. And so with the 21 cars sold by DVCA in Somerset the very next day, an impressive total of 109 classics changed hands at auction in less than twenty-four hours.
Additionally, among the collector bikes auctioned at Leominster, an ex-Halbert Collection 1931 Matchless Silver Hawk 593cc with 6 to 12v upgraded electrics attracted a £6200 more than top estimate £24,200, which is thought to be a record valuation for this model under the gavel. At Templecombe meanwhile, DVCA sold a water-cooled 1949 Velocette LE 149cc of the type deployed by PC Plod for rapid response duties in rural parts for £770.
Talking of record results, the £68,750 achieved for a 1974 Jaguar E Type Series 3 5.3-Litre Roadster during the 16 June Barons sale at Sandown Park is almost certainly the highest auction price paid for a non-Commemorative Limited Edition Special V12 Roadster in recent times. A bullish milestone, this, in a records busting recession.
In stark contrast, however, US stock has bombed in recent UK auctions with seven 1967/83 vintage V8 dinosaurs in a row at Brightwells and a solitary 1976 Chrysler New Yorker Sedan at DVCA not only all failing to sell, but even more significantly also attracting few discernable bidders.
The lower estimates ranged from what one might have thought would have been a perfectly affordable £5000 and £6000 in the case of two unsold Americans to more optimistic and also unachievable minimum guide prices in the £11,000-17,000 bracket. If vendors of such muscular kit were to be vastly more realistic and slash their reserves, perhaps altogether even, would in fact a greater percentage of these thirsty behemoths actually sell? As distress selling has yet to happen in this sector, one can only guesstimate as to where prices would end up.
For although seriously big bucks are still being invested in old Detroit iron Stateside, on the greener side of the Atlantic pond these muscular and thirsty behemoths have well and truly fallen out of fashion, perceived by many perhaps as being too openly excessive in hard times. Indeed, most post-war Yank Tanks may even be in grave danger of permanently exceeding their sell-by dates in a market where consumers are only likely to become increasingly environmentally aware.
