MARKET COMMENTARY FROM resident analyst Richard Hudson-Evans
JAGS OCCUPY FIRST AND SIXTH PLACES IN ARIZONA TOP DOZEN
A 1956 Jaguar D Type Jaguar, raced in the US in period, sold by Gooding for $3,740,000 (£2.32m) to record the highest price during the clutch of Arizona sales. A 1959 Lister-Jaguar with aerodynamically slippery sports-racing bodywork penned by Frank Costin raised $1,100,000 (£683,230) meanwhile, again at the same Gooding sale in Scottsdale, to become the sixth most expensive collector vehicle car at the new North American auction season opening fixtures.
Three Ferraris made the leader board this year led by a 1959 250GT Series 1 Cabriolet sold by Gooding for $2,145,000 (£1.33m). A 1960 250GT Series 2 Cabriolet made $797,500 (£495,342) in the storm-delayed Russo & Steele at Scottsdale and a 1965 275GTB Coupe $737,000 (£457,764) at Gooding. A trio of Duesenbergs achieved big bucks too, with a 1934 Model J Disappearing-Top Convertible-Coupe and a 1930 Model J Convertible-Sedan attracting $1,815,000 (£1.13m) and $825,000 (£512,422) respectively at Gooding, and a 1935 JN Rollston Convertible sold for $792,000 (£491,925) in the Kruse sale at Glendale. A 1936 Hispano-Suiza T68 J12 Cabriolet tied with a 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SV Gran Sport in fourth place, selling at Gooding for $1,540,000 (£956,522) apiece. Whilst a seventh-placed supercharged 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 found $1,028,500 (£638,820) at Gooding - and, by selling at RM in Phoenix for $1,001,000 (£621,739), a 1963 Aston Martin DB4GT was the eighth highest priced car of the week.
Even before Rosso & Steele have been able to finalise their storm-delayed sale's prices, the figures from the other five houses who have declared official results from their Arizona auctions amount to a set of confidence-boosting statistics. For, so far, a staggering $126.39m (£78.50m) has been invested in 1719 cars, 87 per cent of the 1973 total number crossing the block, with an average price paid of around $78,500 (£45,700) per car. The next market readings for UK auction prices will be the Tuesday 9 February Barons sale at Sandown Park in Surrey followed by Wednesday 17 when H&H hold their first Buxton sale of the new year in the Derbyshire Peak District. Which cars fetch how much at the auctions and, more importantly, why they do so will be revealed throughout 2010 right here on CCFS.
