Some History of the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost

C.S. Rolls, a pioneer motorist and London motor dealer, and Henry Royce, a Manchester businessman then producing electric cranes, resulted in the manufacture of the 'best car in the world' and the formation of Rolls-Royce Ltd., in 1906. However, while Henry Royce had been concentrating on listing a variety of models, it was down to managing director, Claude Johnson, that his persuasion to a one-model policy was adopted, and so it was that the 40/50hp 7-litre side valve was shown for the first time here at Olympia in 1906, offering unrivalled luxury and quality. Production of the 40/50hp, the 'Silver Ghost', lasted no less than twenty years, with a revised longer stoke engine being introduced in 1909 to 7.4 litres.
