The huge £2,693 price did nothing to deter sales, Mercedes selling 25,881 examples between 1955 and 1963. More comfortable than any of the archetypal British sports cars of the time, with a top speed of 107mph, a well appointed cockpit, a smooth 120bhp engine and sensible luggage space, the 190SL was perfect for its market. The 190 engine was a 1,897cc overhead-camshaft four, the first such engine ever to feature in a Mercedes. With four speed synchromesh gearbox, servo-assisted brakes and fully independent all round suspension, the very willing M121 engine produced lively performance, fed by twin Solex carburettors.
