A very large auction audience also witnessed the 1938 Earls Court Show SS100 3½-Litre Roadster from the La Vignette Collection of Jaguars sell for a mid-estimate £199,500.
From the same source, a 1935 SS1 20hp Airline Coupe made £76,300, a left-hand drive 1948 Mark IV 3½-Litre Drophead £56,500, a 1933 SS1 4-Seater Tourer £53,200, a 1948 Mark IV 3½-Litre Drophead £52,100, a 1938 SS 2½-Litre Drophead £51,000, a 1950 Mark V 2½-Litre saloon £26,450, a 1955 Mark VII 3½-Litre Type M Saloon £20,125 and a 1948 1½-Litre Saloon £17,825.
The necessary £89,500 was forthcoming for the 1930 Aston Martin works demonstrator International 2/4 1½-Litre Sports Tourer. Whilst a beautifully presented 1954 Bentley R Type with Countryman conversion by Harold Radford made an above estimate £42,200.
Following their previous month’s sale at Oxford, where there was only one non-seller, the UK collector vehicle auction market leaders secured buyers for all but four cars here. With a ground-up restored Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire TR Mark IX 2-Seater Fighter/Trainer flying to £1,739,500 to stay in Britain to much applause, and a further £18,400 paid for the ‘100 SS’ registration and £978 for a 1959 Triumph T20 Tiger Cub motorcycle plus automobilia sales, the overall sale total for the afternoon rose to £3.85m.
