Richard Hudson-Evans says, A clutch of mainly static displayed exhibits from a Lake District collection attracted a very full house of potential new owners to H&H’s regular home venue at Buxton, reports Richard Hudson-Evans, where the star property auctioned in the Northern firm’s 100th sale, a 1937 Alvis 4.3-Litre Short Chassis with Vanden Plas Tourer accommodation for four, raised an impressive £198,000, £78,000 above guide price.
Following many years of inactivity, however, most of the collection cars were cosmetically challenged in close-up and, apart from being over-ripe for full restorations, were declared to be non-running and therefore also required mechanical recommissioning before they could be driven anywhere. The auctioneers estimates, which had been pitched attractively low and accurately reflected the poor condition of the stock, resulted in huge pre-sale interest and keen competition for every lot with way over top estimate prices paid by successful bidders.
Most notable performers under the hammer among what really should be regarded as restoration projects were a 1955 Bristol 405 Drophead taken on for £33,000, £23,000 more than the top estimate, and a 1955 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe for £31,900, £16,900 more than the guide price.
The 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk2, originally the Austin Motor Company’s Home Sales demonstrator and subsequently the personal transport of Donald Healey, generated a more than expected £44,000. Indeed, the valuations given by new owners to already restored and relatively mass-produced classics were decidedly bullish here with £12,100 invested in a 1972 chrome-bumpered MGB Roadster with wooden dash, £11,000 available for a 1959 Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite with 1275cc engine and £7150 paid for a 1968 Wolseley Hornet MkII 998 with hydrolastic suspenders. Following the successful conclusion of after-sales, only eight cars were unsold.
