Richard Hudson-Evans says, A 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL with both factory hardtop and mohair hood fetched the required £30,800 under canvas on a Thursday afternoon in Somerset, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. The original right-hand drive Roadster had been in receipt of a Haynes Motor Museum executed bare metal respray and Pipers of Sparkford retrim. By contrast, a 96,009 miles since 1981 500SEL with full service history - though some bubbling below paint on the lower panels - offered lots of teutonic motor car for the £750 paid.
The 1923 Maxwell 23hp 5-Seater Tourer, which hailed from New Zealand where it had been restored to a clearly very high standard, deservedly generated a top estimate £14,850. A cosmetically very sharp 1940 Buick Series 40 Special Business Coupe attracted £10,120 and a 1962 Alvis TD21 Series 1 auto, repainted in 2007 with engine rebuilt in 2005, £10,450.
Star historic commercial crossing the block was a delightfully authentic looking 1931 Bean 14hp former coal merchant’s lorry. Mechanically overhauled during the 1980s and successfully completing the HCVC London to Brighton, the 30cwt Dropside-Lorry, which has also enjoyed TV exposure in ‘The House of Elliot’ and ‘Brideshead Revisited’, raised a mid-estimate £5940. A non-running 1967 Bedford CA Long-Door Van was taken on for a better than forecast £970.
Being in their natural habitat, and therefore amongst so many old friends, Morris Minors continue to be consigned in large numbers to West Country auctions. Top priced Mog this time was a well and freshly restored half-timbered 1968 1000 Traveller which soared to £6820. A 1964 1000 Tourer, also nicely presented, made £4400 and a 1960 Minor 2-Door Saloon £2013.
Likely to be by far the most challenging acquisition was a barn-found 1973 Iso Lele Fastback GT with severely rust-eaten lower bodywork and horrendous interior in beige flock velvet. Minus Ford V8 and automatic transmission, the faded Italian was bravely taken on for £1980 by a charitable benefactor on the telephone.
As with most of the other new season opening sales, attendance was very good with every seat in organiser Brian Chant’s tent occupied by seriously interested punters at least half an hour before the more than 500 lots of warm-up Automobilia, Railwayana and Agricultural curios were speedily auctioned by the Duke’s of Dorchester team of good humoured gavel wielders.
