Richard Hudson-Evans says, One of the largest auction crowds in recent years were magnetised to the Brightwells bumper new season opener at Leominster, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. The turnout was all the more impressive for a weekday event at a venue that is so many miles of twisting rural roads away from the nearest Motorway junction.
Heading the results of a 96 car entry, from which only 11 cars did not change hands, was a 1932 Lagonda 16/80 T4-Style Tourer for four, a former saloon which sold for a more than forecast £58,300. Prewar MGs continue to pull strongly, too, with a 1933 J2 making an above estimate £21,450 and a barn-found 1934 Alvis Speed 20 SC Charlesworth Saloon for restoration was taken on for £15,180.
Of the post-war sporting stock, an only 12,500 miles since 2000 AC Cobra MkIV went for £35,200, a progressively restored 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIIA with upgrades for £27,500 and a 1999 Aston Martin DB7 V12 Vantage with 32,000 miles displayed cost £24,750 in an after-sale.
Bentleys sold here included a £21,780 1998 Turbo RT with 32,000 miles of Straight Eight service history and a £20,130 1954 R Type which had been in storage from 1975 until last year. A late entered 1972 Maserati Bora, one of only 30 in RHD, found £24,200 and, from the same marque and also rare in RHD, a 1972 Indy America generated the required £16,500.
Unusually, there were three Mk2 Ford Cortinas in the sale and all sold. A very tidy historic road rally prepared 1967 Lotus Cortina 2-Door made a higher than expected £15,670, a restored 1967 1600E Phase I 4-Door in concours condition £11,000 and another presentable 1600E from 1968 £3685.
A noteworthy performance here was that of a well restored 1964 MGB Roadster on wires which sold for £10,560. Unmolested time warp examples of the 1961 Rover 80 P4 and the 1959 Ford Prefec 100E sold for £7150 and £4565 apiece. Whilst a fully electrified and cosmetically sharp 1999 Porsche Boxster 2.5 with 82,000 miles of full service history looked like particularly good value for £8140.
