Richard Hudson-Evans says, Having been forced by appalling weather to abandon their Saturday sale during what should have been the Bristol Classic Car Show at a Royal Bath and West Showground that had to be closed to visitors, Charterhouse doggedly persisted with staging their season-opener at the same location on the Monday instead, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. And even though only a modest crowd were prepared to spend a rain-lashed Monday afternoon at the Shepton Mallet venue, there were bidders present with the necessary funds to buy 28 of the consigned vehicles.
Deservedly heading the West Country firm’s results was a well presented 1981 Aston Martin V8, a Series 4 and one of the last ‘Oscar India’ Astons on carburettors, which sold for £30,188. A concours award winning 1969 Jaguar MkII 3.8 with upgrades made a well over top estimate £21,850. By far the largest lot in the sale was a restored 1921 American La France Fire Engine - that is still a 14-litre powered US fire appliance with all fittings intact and, thus far, has survived conversion into a Marathon Speedster – which raised an above guide price £16,100.
A recently rebuilt 1971 Jaguar E Type Series 3 V12 2+2 Fixed Head on wires made the required £14,950, a restored and former South African 1958 MGA Roadster £13,800 and a 63,500m since 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet £10,120. Being in Morris Minor territory, it was hardly surprising therefore that as many as half a dozen Morris Minors, both Saloons ad Convertibles, changed hands here as did a brace of A40 Farinas. Whilst noteworthy among prewar stock to sell were a £7498 1938 Talbot 10 Tourer for four that had been in receipt of ground-up restoration completed in 1985 and a £4485 1936 Austin 7 Tourer for two last on the road in 1967.
