Richard Hudson-Evans says, Occupying their usual display area within one of the cavernous exhibition halls during the annual Autosport Racing Car Show at Birmingham’s characterless though efficient NEC facility, Coys again provided some bullish entertainment for show goers most of whom were pressed against the barriers to spectate at one of the event’s live attractions rather than having any advance intention or, one suspects, the capability of spending any serious dosh on collector vehicles. Nonetheless, reports Richard Hudson-Evans, 23 sale entries were knocked down as sold either to catalogue holders on the stand or to absent contestants on auctioneers telephones, whilst further after-sales will almost certainly be added to the results for this auction in due course.
A once 1959 Ferrari 250 Pininfarina Coupe that had been superbly transformed into most authentic looking 250GT California Long-Wheelbase Spyder by Giovanni Gordenengo in 1995 was the highest priced seller declared at £306,200. And whilst there were no takers here for a 1989 F40, unsold at £195,000, a 1972 365GTB/4 Daytona, abandoned at £145,000, nor for a 2004 360 Modena for which a best offer of £39,000 was also insufficient, £187,400 was forthcoming for a 256.15mph 2007 SSC Aero GT in shrink-wrap and an Aston Martin sales brochure featured 1987 V8 Vantage Volante cost £106,000.
Other noteworthy sellers were a 1966 Alfa Romeo TZ2 1974 recreation by Greppi at £62,000, a FIA regs compliant competition 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS spec Replica with some recent major Euro event form £63,100, the BMW Italia Group A 1984 635CSi £53,200 and a ready to rally ex-Geoff Crabtree 1972 911 3-Litre Coupe £38,900.
A freshly restored 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII made £29,325 here and the 1986 Ferrari 412 auto first owned by tycoon Peter De Savary £9775. All of which only goes to confirm that, despite the down-wave that threatens to swamp most economic activity, there are still some intrepid punters out there prepared to invest in such tangible stock in 2009.
