Richard Hudson-Evans says, Only two Veterans failed to change hands under the hammer during the now firmly established annual buying and selling opportunity for early automobiles at Bonhams New Bond Street saleroom, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. A target audience of 2008 London to Brighton Runners and would-be participants, all of whom were in the West End for this year’s event which started from Hyde Park on the Sunday, saw a 1902 9hp Clement with Rear-Entrance Tonneau accommodation for four top the results by selling for £150,000.
Further strength in this very niche sector of the collector vehicle market - where the supply of stock is fully charted and therefore finite - was confirmed by a 1903 Malicet et Blin 8hp 4-Seater fetching £84,000 and a 1904 De Dion Bouton Model Y 6hp for four £80,700. £65,300 was available for a 1903 Gamage Aster 6½hp with Rear-Entrance Tonneau coachwork faithfully re-created by Ty-Carol of Pembrokeshire and £64,200 for a 1904 Cadillac 6½hp Model A 4-Seater. Whilst £62,000 bought a 1901 Renault 4½hp Type D Series with rear-facing back seat and £60,900 a 1901 De Dion Bouton 4½hp Voiturette.
Particularly quirky were an 1896 Leon Bollee motor-tricycle with a pair of wheels at the front and tandem seating for two, which raised a stonking £69,700, and a 1903 Orient Buckboard 4hp 2-Seater also exceeded estimate to sell for £25,875.
