Richard Hudson-Evans says, Undoubtedly, a significant proportion of the Sunday afternoon audience in the Haynes Motor Museum had come to check out the live reality of the our market for themselves, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. Happily however, and despite trading rooms around the financial world being close to televised Armageddon, the large crowd of spectators as well as the braver players present were able to return to their motor houses greatly reassured by having witnessed H&H sell some significant motor cars for serious money.
For although the once Gillie Tyrer campaigned 1937 Frazer Nash-BMW 328 Roadster failed to raise the £350,000 sought under the hammer, the highest offer of several bids was provisionally logged at £320,000 and an after-sale may well yet be concluded. It was left therefore to a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider America, one of 59 produced in right-hand drive which had been fabulously restored in Italy in the late 1990s, to top the results at £247,500.
The well over top estimate £104,500 paid for a much raced AC-engine AC Ace was an extremely bullish valuation, too, as were the performances under the hammer of a restored 1937 Aston Martin 2-Litre 15/98 with Abbey bodywork, which was knocked down to the Dutch trade for a premium-inclusive £91,300, and a 1939 Alvis Cadillac 7.4-Litre V16 Special also sold for a way over top estimate £60,500.
Other noteworthy prices achieved here were the £82,500 paid for a right-hand drive and freshly restored 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT, £23,100 for a right-hand drive 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider and £15,400 for a 1960 Triumph TR3A on wires with overdrive, left to right-hand drive converted during a well executed restoration.
This was a debut sale for H&H in Sparkford and the northern firm announced that they will return to the Haynes Museum again next April.
