Richard Hudson-Evans says, A pair of competition Grand Tourers that catered for the private owner market in the mid-1960s topped the Goodwood Revival auction prices, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. The Porsche 904 GTS driven by Robert Buchet and Ben Pon at Le Mans in 1965 fetched a close to mid-estimate £485,500 and a 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ Berlinetta with period French rally history achieved the necessary £254,500. Both had been consigned by five times Tour De France Automobile winner Bernard Consten.
A 1931-type, part-original and supercharged Maserati 8C-2800 two-seater racer also raised an impressive £243,500 during the Friday evening event and there was £76,300 available for a totally mint 1937 SS 2½-Litre Sports Saloon.
Aston Martin prices recorded in the Bonhams marquee this year included a 1970 DB6 Mk2 Volante at £287,500, a restored 1965 DB5 Fixed Head £131,399, a part-restored DB5 of the same year £74,100 and a 1967 DB6 Mk1 auto £56,500.
An extremely rare in right-hand drive 1967 Lamborghini 400GT was keenly contested until sold for £109,300, £24,300 above top estimate. Whilst a near grid full of right-hand drive Ferraris also changed hands here with £84,000 available for a 1972 Ferrari 246GTS, £67,550 paid for a 1973 Dino 246GT, £58,700 for a 1978 512BB, £45,500 for the 1966 Earls Court Show 330GT 2+2 and a most reasonable £9200 landing a much raced, though still presentable 1974 308GT4.
Particularly bullish were the double guide price £67,500 paid for a 1945 NSU-made, WW2 military ‘Kettenkrad’ half-motorcycle/half-track ammo carrier and the world record £397,500 invested in registration S1, the first number plate to have been issued in Edinburgh.
