Collectors' Motor Cars Auction - Bonhams Auction House

Richard Hudson-Evans says, All three of the Vintage GN Cyclecars from the collection of former Chesham garage proprietor Stafford East sold at Beaulieu, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. A most authentic looking ‘Kim II’ - or rather a clone of the famous pre-war racing car campaigned with almost unchallenged success by Archie Frazer Nash in the 1920s - led the chain-driven results with a premium-inclusive £65,300. Meanwhile, a 1922 dated Vitesse 2-Seater Voiturette with marque-appropriate ‘GN 1922’ registration raised a thumping £63,000, more than twice the lower guide price, and one of only a handful of ‘Akela’ GNs as produced for the 200 Mile Race at Brooklands sold for £56,500.
Lord Berkeley was present to see a new owner pay £65,850 for his 1931 Lagonda 2-Litre Tourer to much applause. After 41 years in vendor family ownership, a 1935 Riley 9hp Imp 2-Seater, restored awhile back, raised an above estimate £59,800 and £58,700 was the latest price paid for a 1971 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 auto.
A beautifully presented 1919 Clement Talbot 25/50hp 4½-Litre Type 4SW Salmons All-Weather Tourer fully justified a £56,500 price tag, a more than double top estimate £45,500 was paid for a 1940 Chevrolet KA Special DeLuxe Convertible Coupe and a bullish £38,900 was invested in an ex-US and restored 1964 Porsche 356C 1600SC Coupe. Particularly good value for £29,325 was a still quite original Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head with 58,000 miles recorded since new in 1956 that had been updated with power-steering and alternator and a 1933 Riley 9hp Kestrel with Brooklands history was surely well bought for £8625.
Additionally, there were buyers for all but two of the motorcycles led by a 1930 Brough Superior 980cc SS80 at £58,700, more than twice the top estimate. The 86% success rate for vehicles sold here was undoubtedly boosted by Eurozone buyers who attended Beaulieu and the annual buying and selling opportunity provided by this auction in even greater numbers than usual.
