Sports, Competition & Collectors Motor C Auction - Bonhams Auction House

Richard Hudson-Evans says, A new world record price for any Jaguar was set during the Friday auction at the 17th Bonhams sale to be held on the Friday afternoon of the annual Festival of Speed weekend. The D Type Sports Racing Car was sold to a British buyer for £2,201,500, bettering the previous record of £1.7, set in 1999. Sold on behalf of the Littlewoods Pools family, ‘XKD509’ was the very first production D Type, which, when new in 1955, had cost £2500.
The £419,500 paid for the 1930 Invicta 4½-litre S-Type Tourer ‘Scimitar’ is also the highest auction price ever for an Invicta, while the £19,550 achieved by the ex-works 1967 Sunbeam Rallye Imp which Andrew Cowan drove to 2nd overall on the Scottish is a record price for an Imp at auction. Chassis no. RIA - the first prototype ERA and one of the truly iconic cars of the Vintage racing scene from 1956 to the present day - sold to a private UK collector in the tent for £359,000.
A collection of Italian Grand Tourers put together by Alexander ‘Chips’ Fyshe, who was in the front row to see his cache sold, proved to be a powerful magnet with a 1970 Monteverdi 375/S Series II more than doubling its top estimate to sell for £89,500. After 34 years in his ownership, a rare in right-hand drive 1969 Ferrari 365GTC raised £90,600, the only known example of a believed to be Boano-bodied 1952 SIATA Daina SL Sport Berlinetta £74,100 and a 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta £49,900. There were buyers for all but one of the Fyshe cars.
A 1970 Lamborghini Miura P4000S from the James Moores Collection sold for £243,500. A 1969 Ferrari 365GTC/S with conversion to Spyder by Graypaul fetched £188,500, a 1990 F40GTM £183,000 and a 1965/93 330GT/250 GTO Replica £150,000. Other highlights included a 1905 Leon Bollee 45/50hp Roi-de-Belges Tourer sold for £133,500, a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 with Mk3 bonnet £124,700, a 1959 AC Ace-Bristol £106,000 and a one owner from new in 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL £29,900. More auction cars filled a longer marquee than in previous years.
