Richard Hudson-Evans says, In association with Sotheby’s, in whose London offices their European Team are based, RM set a new world record in their annual Ferrari Sale in Italy for the most expensive car ever to be sold at auction, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. Sitting in the front row with Budweiser in hand, the media entrepreneur and BBC Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans outbid a US contestant to secure the ex-James Coburn 1961 250GT Short-Wheelbase California Spyder for a premium-inclusive 7,040,000 Euros (£5.6m) Standing for 21 years and established during the last bull market, the previous record was held by the £5.5m Bugatti Royale sold by Robert Brooks at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987.
Among nine other lots to raise over the magic $1m apiece at the Fiorano Test Track venue, the 1964 Jochen Rindt race winning 250LM sold for 4,510,000 Euros and a 1958 250GT LWB-California Spyder for 2,365,000 Euros. A 1971 512M Sports-Racer made 2,090,000 Euros, a 1967 275GTB/4 Coupe 1,320,000 Euros and 1962 250GT Lusso Competition 1,100,000 Euros. In the 40th Anniversary year of the Daytona, an award-winning 1971 365GTS/4 Daytona Spyder was successfully driven across the block for 962,500 Euros.
